Panda bears are solitary animals except for mothers with cubs. Pandas are territorial animals and male ranges are larger than females. Male territories overlap those of females. Adult individuals avoid contact with each other and their coat color prevents them from approaching too close to another of their own kind. Giant Pandas are active at any time of the day or night. They can feed both on the ground and on the trees.
Pandas are rather vocal and communicate with 11 different calls. Lowering the head and staring at the opponent means aggression. To signify submissiveness Pandas put their head between their front legs or hiding the eye-patches with their paws.
Panda Bears - Food
Like all bears, Pandas are omnivorous. The most important plant in the Pandas' life is bamboo; it represents 99% of their diet. Pandas eat about 30 species of bamboo. These animals spend about 12 hours every day eating bamboo and are able to eat as much as 38 kg of it every day because it's low in nutrients. Pandas have a special wrist bones that help them to grasp bamboo stalks. Pandas peel off the tough layers to get to the soft inner tissue. Their cheek muscles and jawbones are strong enough to crush and to chew the thick stalks with their back teeth. Bamboo leaves are also edible for the Panda bear.
Sometimes Pandas eat grasses, mushrooms, rice, fish, insects, and fruits. If the usual food is scarce, Pandas can even eat rodents and carrion. In captivity, Pandas should be fed bamboo, yams, carrot and special biscuits made of grain and containing all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Panda bears are not effective feeders; Pandas digest only 20% of what they eat.
