Panda Bears - Range and Habitat

Panda bears live in southwestern China. They inhabit damp, misty forests of bamboo and conifers and can be found in altitudes above 1200 meters. There are two types of Pandas: the Giant black and white Panda, and the lesser, Red Panda. Giant Pandas live only in 6 regions in China; Red Pandas live in China, Tibet, Burma, India and Nepal. Panda bears have the most restricted distribution of all bears.

Panda Bears - History

Pandas appeared during the late Pliocene or early Pleistocene, no more than 2-3 million years ago. In China, Pandas have always been rare and semi-divine animals. Giant Pandas were kept by emperors and were believed to ward off evil spirits and disasters. Reference to Giant Pandas appeared in Chinese literature for more than 2000 years. The Panda bear was totally unknown to the Europeans until the end of the 19th century.

Panda Bears - Reproduction

Giant Pandas mate from March to May and in August or September and give birth to 1-2 blind and helpless cubs. Females can raise only one baby. A newborn Panda cub is about the size of a chipmunk, and one month later it grows real Panda fur. The cub stays with the mother for 1-2 years. Panda bears reach maturity at 4 to 7 years of age.
